Some time between the invention of photography and our present day, where we find ourselves scrolling past a throng of thirty-second videos on our mobile devices, a technology called screen printing made its way from East Asia into Europe and America. Also known as silkscreen printing (if you're a purist), it was welcomed by the world for its ability to speed up the printing process during its commercial and democratic turn. While the advent of the tracing-film photo process rendered prints mostly accurate, the chance of paint or ink overflowing the stencil left room for spontaneity. Artists welcomed this sense of freedom. Not quite mass-production, not quite one-of-a-kind, screen printing's ambiguity and thus versatile position lent itself to its survival, even after digital printing effectively replaced much of its role. <ARRANGEMENT 02> showcases the discoveries made from the play between screen printing and digital printing. In particular, it highlights what the material conditions induce when printing technologies, mostly used for two-dimensional work, are applied to garments. The floral patterns on Jaden Cho’s shirts, skirts and dresses have been screen-printed in their ready-made forms by SAA(Screen Art Agency), a screen printing studio based in Paju. Due to the garments’ curvatures, the floral patterns are printed irregularly, making each garment an ‘edition,’ unique from the other. Meanwhile, model-turned- photographer Ha Esun's images of the three-dimensional world in its natural state are digitally printed and applied evenly to Jaden Cho’s “flat” flag dresses, which become three- dimensional again when worn. This exhibition is a collaboration of the chances inherent in the process of creating an image. Ha Esun says much of her work hinges on “then and there.” For the SAA, image is not just visual, but a culmination of frame, density and viscosity of ink, absorbency of print material, pressure and drying time. Their commitment to both the moment and the material blurs our conventional understanding of “flat” and “mass.” If “the surface is where materiality is compressed,” then Ha Esun’s black-and-white photograph screen-printed by SAA, displayed as a wall-hanging at the front of the house, is a world where lush thicket, sunlight, gravity, ink and textile gather at the right time, at the right place.
